...A group of intracellular parasitic bacteria belonging to the Rickettsiaceae family, whose size is intermediate between that of normal bacteria and viruses. The first discovery of rickettsia was in 1909, when H. T. Ricketts discovered bacteria-like bodies in the blood of patients with Rocky Mountain spotted fever and reported this. In 1916, Henrique da Rocha-Lima (1879-1956) named it after Ricketts, who died of typhus infection while studying the pathogen (also a rickettsia) of typhus.
