Gamla Uppsala (English spelling)

…the cultural, religious and political centre of the Svea people in prehistoric and early medieval times. The Suiones (Svea) mentioned in Tacitus's Germania lived in Uppland, with their political centre at Gamla Uppsala, on the northern edge of the modern city of Uppsala. There are around 300 burial mounds here, and the three largest burial mounds at the eastern end are believed to be the descendants of the Yngling kings (5th-6th centuries) mentioned by Snorri Sturluson.
