Bhāratendu Hariścandra

Indian literary figure. The son of a wealthy merchant from Benares (now Varanasi), he died at the young age of 35, but left an immortal name as the founder of modern Hindi literature. At the age of 15, he made a pilgrimage to the holy city of Jagannath, and was deeply impressed by the modern civilization that had been introduced from Britain in Calcutta along the way. Since then, he has walked all over India, observing the current situation closely and feeling inspired by new life. He began writing in his late teens, and has written, translated, and adapted poetry, plays, critiques, essays, and other works.

インドの文学者。ベナレス(現，ワーラーナシー)の豪商の子で，35歳の若さで世を去ったが，近代ヒンディー文学の創始者として不朽の名を残した。15歳のときに聖地ジャガンナートに巡礼に行った際，途中のカルカッタでイギリスから導入された近代文明に接し，大きな衝撃をうける。以来インド各地を歩いて，現状をつぶさにみて新しいいぶきにふれた。10代の末ごろから文筆活動をはじめ，詩，戯曲，評論，随筆などの分野で創作と翻訳･翻案を行う。
