1850‐85 Indian literary figure. The son of a wealthy merchant from Benares (now Varanasi), he died at the young age of 35, but left an immortal name as the founder of modern Hindi literature. At the age of 15, he made a pilgrimage to the holy city of Jagannath, and was deeply impressed by the modern civilization that had been introduced from Britain in Calcutta along the way. Since then, he has walked all over India, observing the current situation closely and feeling inspired by new life. He began writing in his late teens, and has written, translated, and adapted poetry, plays, critiques, essays, and other works. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
