A perennial plant of the legume family. It is also known as Diptera gracilis and Taniwatashi. It commonly grows in grasslands and fields at the foot of mountains throughout Japan. The plant is 30-60 cm tall, with upright or oblique stems and thin but clearly ridged leaves. The leaves are alternate and consist of pairs of oblong or lanceolate leaflets, without tendrils. The kidney-shaped, pointed stipules stand out on both sides of the base of the petiole. From summer to autumn, the plant grows racemes 2-4 cm long in the leaf axils, producing many beautiful crimson-purple, butterfly-shaped flowers about 12 mm long. Young leaves are boiled and eaten. They were named after the leaflets of the Nandina tree, which look similar to them.
