A state in Western Australia. It has an area of 2,525,500 km2 and a population of 1,760,000 (1996). Its capital is Perth. Most of the state is desert or semi-arid, with 88% of the land receiving less than 500 mm of rain per year. Wheat cultivation and other agricultural industries are well developed, but the only area with a population density of more than 1 person per km2 is the southwest (5% of the state's area), where about 90% of the population is concentrated, and 72% of the population is in the state capital alone. Compared to other states, it is the state most specialized in mining, accounting for about a quarter of the nation's employment and production. It is particularly important as a producer of iron ore (more than 90% of national production), nickel (100%), bauxite, and salt. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
