Japanese: 岩国[市] - いわくに

A city in eastern Yamaguchi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1940. It faces Hiroshima Bay and occupies the Nishiki River basin, the upper Shimada River basin, and the middle Oze River basin. The central city, located in the delta at the mouth of the river and on the reclaimed plain, developed as a castle town of the Kikawa clan with a stipend of 60,000 koku. After the end of the Taisho period, factories of Teikoku Rayon, Sanyo Pulp, and Toyobo were established, as well as the former Army Fuel Depot and the former Navy Air Corps, and it developed as an industrial city and military base. The Sanyo Main Line, Shinkansen, and Sanyo Expressway run through the city, and the Iwakuni Line and Nishikigawa Railway branch off from it. There are Iwakuni Port, Iwakuni Kintaikyo Airport, and a US military base. A petrochemical complex has been formed that stretches over Otake City in Hiroshima Prefecture, and textile, paper pulp, and machinery industries are also thriving. Lotus root and Iwakuni ware are specialty products. Cormorant fishing on the Nishiki River is famous. There is the Kintai Bridge and a habitat for white snakes (a natural monument). Jakuchiyama in the north is included in the West Chugoku Mountains Quasi-National Park. In March 2006, the towns of Yu, Kuga, Shuto, Nishiki, Mikawa, Miwa, and Hongo were incorporated into the park. The area is 873.72 ^km2 . The population is 143,857 (2010).

山口県東部の市。1940年市制。広島湾に面し，錦川流域と島田川上流域，小瀬川中流域を占める。河口部の三角州と干拓平野部にある中心市街は吉川(きっかわ)氏６万石の城下町として発達，大正末期以後帝国人絹，山陽パルプ，東洋紡績の諸工場が立地，旧陸軍燃料廠，旧海軍航空隊も置かれ，工業都市，軍事基地として発展した。山陽本線，新幹線，山陽自動車道が通じ，岩徳線，錦川鉄道が分岐し，岩国港や岩国錦帯橋空港，米軍基地がある。広島県大竹市にまたがる石油化学コンビナートが形成され，繊維・紙パルプ・機械工業も盛ん。レンコン，岩国焼を特産。錦川の鵜飼いは有名。錦帯橋，シロヘビ生息地（天然記念物）がある。北部の寂地(じゃくち)山は西中国山地国定公園に含まれる。2006年３月玖珂郡由宇町，玖珂町，周東町，錦町，美川町，美和町，本郷村を編入。873.72km²。14万3857人（2010）。
