[Hot springs and earthquakes]
Although there is no established method to predict earthquakes from fluctuations in hot springs, the following clear precursor phenomena have been observed. It is known that the Oyu geyser in Atami, Shizuoka Prefecture, gave clear precursors to the Great Kanto earthquake ( M 7.9) that occurred on September 1, 1923. The Oyu geyser stopped erupting completely on December 20, 1922.
