Inuenju - Inuenju

A deciduous tree of the legume family (APG classification: Fabaceae) with a height of 10-15 meters. The leaves are odd-pinnate compound, with 7-11 leaflets, ovate, and 4-8 cm long. In July and August, compound racemes appear at the ends of the branches that have grown that year, and many butterfly-shaped flowers are produced. The flowers are white, 10-12 mm long, with strongly recurved flagellums, and the 10 stamens are separate to the base. The legumes are broadly linear and flattened, 4-8 cm long, with narrow wings along the upper suture. They produce 3-6 seeds. They grow in the mountains from Hokkaido to Kyushu. They are also distributed in the Korean Peninsula, China, and the Russian Far East. They are used as garden trees, and the beautiful and tough wood is used for alcove pillars or as a substitute for rosewood for furniture and crafts. Its name means something similar to the sophora japonica but not the same, but what has traditionally been called sophora japonica is this species, which later became confused with the sophora japonica (Enju) introduced from China, commonly known as the sophora japonica, and it seems that the name was added to the name of this species to avoid this confusion. Even today, there are some areas where the two species are confused. The sophora japonica differs from the Inu sophora japonica in that the legumes are narrowed between the seeds, forming a bead-like shape, and the skin is fleshy.

マメ科（APG分類：マメ科）の落葉高木で、高さ10～15メートル。葉は奇数羽状複葉、小葉は7～11枚、卵形で長さ4～8センチメートル。7～8月、その年に伸びた枝の先に複総状花序を出し、蝶形花(ちょうけいか)を多数つける。花は白く長さ10～12ミリメートル、蝶形花冠の旗弁(きべん)は強く反り返り、10本の雄しべは基部まで離生する。豆果は広線形で扁平(へんぺい)、長さ4～8センチメートル、上側の縫合線に沿って狭い翼がある。種子は3～6個。北海道から九州の山中に生える。朝鮮半島、中国、極東ロシアにも分布する。庭木とされ、材は美しくねばり強いので床柱、あるいはシタンの代用として家具、細工物に使われる。エンジュに似て非なるものの意味でこの名があるが、古来エンジュとよばれていたものは本種であって、のちに中国から渡来した槐(えんじゅ)いわゆるエンジュと混同されるようになり、これを避けるために本種にイヌをつけて区別するようになったものらしい。いまでも地方によっては両種を混同している所がある。エンジュは豆果が種子と種子の間でくびれて数珠(じゅず)状になり、果皮が肉質であるなどの特徴をもち、イヌエンジュとは異なる。
