[Changes in the concept of the Indian Ocean]
The Greeks had known for a long time that the Erythraean Sea (a collective term for the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, and the Indian Ocean) was connected to the Atlantic Ocean (as seen in the writings of Herodotus and the Perspective of the Erythraean Sea). However, Ptolemy (2nd century), the compendium of ancient geography, considered the Indian Ocean to be an inland sea surrounded by land.
