Aira [town] - Aira

Japanese: 姶良[町] - あいら

An old town in Aira District, facing the northern end of Kagoshima Bay in central Kagoshima Prefecture. The Shirasu plateau is extensive and rice paddy productivity is low, but vegetables are grown, and chicken farming is particularly popular. The main settlement is Chosa, which is on the Nippō Main Line and Kyushu Expressway. With the development of Kagoshima City, residential areas have increased, and food and textile factories have also moved in. Old Chosa ware, which was started by a Korean potter, is the origin of Satsuma ware. In March 2010, it merged with Kajiki Town and Gamo Town in Aira District to become a city, forming Aira City. Area: 102.52 ^km2 . Population: 44,671 (2005).

鹿児島県中部，鹿児島湾北端に臨む姶良郡の旧町。シラス台地が広く水田の生産力も低いが，野菜栽培も行われ，特に養鶏は盛ん。主集落は日豊本線，九州自動車道が通じる帖佐(ちょうさ)で，鹿児島市の発展に伴う住宅地がふえ，食品，繊維の工場も進出している。朝鮮の陶工に開窯させた古帖佐焼は薩摩焼の源流。2010年３月姶良郡加治木町，蒲生町と合併して市制施行，姶良市となる。102.52km²。４万4671人（2005）。
