1899‐1991 Indian communist politician. A supporter of Tilak, he turned to Marxism after the Russian Revolution. Immediately after the First Non-Cooperation Movement, he published Gandhi versus Lenin in 1921, criticizing Gandhi's ideas and actions. He was one of the pioneers of the Indian trade union movement and one of the founders of the Communist Party of India (CPI), for which he was imprisoned for over a decade. After independence, he became chairman of the CPI in 1962, but when the party split in 1964, he supported the Soviet-affiliated CPI, and remained in that position until the end of 1979.
