A cultural affairs bureau established by the Dutch colonial government in Indonesia. The idea was realized in September 1908 with the establishment of the Committee for the Promotion of Native Schools and People's Literature, and in September 1917, it was fully underway with the opening of Balai Pustaka (People's Cultural Bureau) in Batavia (now Jakarta). With the goal of improving the culture of indigenous society, it collected Western books and translated Western literary works into Malay (Indonesian), as well as collecting and publishing folk tales and chronicles from all over Indonesia.
