This is the title of Grimm's Fairy Tales No. 182, but similar tales are found in many parts of Ireland, as well as throughout Europe, Turkey, Iran, and India. A tailor and a goldsmith are traveling when on a moonlit night they come across some dwarves singing and dancing on a hill. At a signal from a large old man in the middle, the two join in. The old man then shaves off their hair and beards. They then receive some coal and return home, and the next morning it has turned to pure gold. The goldsmith is greedy and tries again, but when he looks the next morning, even the pure gold from the previous day has turned to coal.

《グリム童話》182番の題名であるが，同じタイプの昔話はアイルランドに多く，その他ヨーロッパ全域，トルコ，イラン，インドにも分布している。仕立屋と金細工師が旅をしていると，月夜に丘の上で小人たちが歌いつつ踊っている。真ん中にいる大きな爺（じじい）の合図で2人もいっしょに踊る。すると爺に髪とひげを剃り落とされる。それから石炭をもらって帰ると，翌朝には純金になっている。金細工師は欲ばって再び試みるが，翌朝見ると，前日の純金まで石炭になっている。
