A state in northern Brazil. It has an area of 1,248,042 km2 (14.66% of Brazil), a population of 5,448,600 (1995), and a population density of 4.3 people/km2. Its capital is Belém. It occupies the lower Amazon basin and is the second largest state after Amazonas. It is bordered to the east by the Araguaia River and the Gurupi River, tributaries of the Tocantins River. It is located between 2°38' north and 9°50' south latitudes, and most of it has a tropical rainforest climate just below the equator. In the state capital, Belém, the average annual temperature is 27.0°C, the highest temperature is around 32°C throughout the year, and the annual precipitation is 2,593 mm, with monthly precipitation of 60-70 mm in August and September, making it the dry season.
