Phylloglossum (English spelling)

Japanese: フィログロッスム（英語表記）Phylloglossum

A genus of very specialized small ferns in the family Lycopodium, found in New Zealand and Australia. The base of the body is a tuberous tuber, from which emerges a stalk with clusters of rod-shaped leaves. When mature, the stalk elongates and bears a sporangium at the end. Branches extend downward from the stalk, and new tubers are produced at the end. This specialized structure allows the plant to adapt to areas with a clear difference between the rainy and dry seasons. [Kato Masahiro]
