A deciduous shrub of the Saxifragaceae family that grows on the forest floor along roadsides and streams in tropical and subtropical mountains, with a trunk 1-2 m tall (illustration). It is not native to Japan, but is occasionally cultivated. The leaves are stalked and opposite, with an obovate-elliptical blade that is usually the widest slightly above, wedge-shaped at the base, pointed at the tip, 7-22 cm long, 4-7 cm wide, and coarsely sawtoothed along the edges. Young branches, petioles, and leaf blades are finely hairy. The beautiful blue-purple flowers bloom in large numbers in corymbs at the ends of branches or in the upper leaf axils of the branches.
