[history]
Most of the city area is centered on the eastern part of Iidaka County and Iino County in the former Ise Province (including parts of Taki and Ichishi counties). Iino County was one of the three counties of Ise Shrine territory known as the "Shinsangun" (the Three Divine Counties) during the Heian Period, and Iidaka County was later also designated as a sacred territory.
