French painter. Born in Bordeaux. While studying at the École des Beaux-Arts (National School of Fine Arts), he met Matisse under Professor Moreau, and in 1905 he joined the Fauvism movement, painting street and seaside landscapes throughout his life. His style was more moderate than Matisse's, and he skillfully used nuances of intermediate colors rather than pure colors. → Related article Rouault Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
