Cilicia - Cilicia (English spelling)

Cilicia - Cilicia (English spelling)

The Mediterranean coastal area in southeastern Asia Minor. It borders Syria to the east, and reaches Cappadocia and Lyocanea to the north, bordering the Taurus Mountains. It is divided into the rugged mountainous region of Cilicia to the west and the flat plain of Pedia, bordering Syria to the east. Between these areas is the famous "Cilicia Gate" in the Taurus Mountains, which was an important trade route from inside Anatolia to Mesopotamia along the Euphrates River. At the same time, the area is noted for its intermediate trade with the Eblaite Kingdom, which emerged in the 3rd millennium BC. The "Cilicia Gate" was also an important stage for the Hittite and Alexander the Great expeditions. It was later ruled by Rome, the Armenian Kingdom, Turkey, and France, and is now owned by Turkey.
