A school of swordsmiths who lived in Osafune, Bizen Province, from the mid-Kamakura period to the end of the Muromachi period. The first master was Mitsutada in the mid-Kamakura period. Swordsmiths have lived in this area of what is now Okayama Prefecture since the Heian period, and before the Osafune school there were other schools such as the Ko-Bizen school and the Ichimonji school. The Osafune school became the largest school from the mid-Kamakura period onwards due to the beauty of the shape and blade pattern of its swords, and it produced master swordsmiths of each era, including Mitsutada, Nagamitsu, Kagemitsu, Masanaga, Kanemitsu and Sukesada. The swords they make are called Osafune-mono. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
