...The Iraqi government's Antiquities Department excavated the site in 1947-49, revealing important facts related to the core of the tradition. A deep pit was dug in the center of the tell, reaching the natural layers, and it was confirmed that layers I-V correspond to the Uruk period, layers VI and VII to the Ubaid II period, layers VIII-XI to the Ubaid I period, and layers XII-XIV to the Hajj Muhammad period. However, layers XV-XIX show cultural elements that were discovered for the first time, and were given the name of the Eridu period. Temples were built almost continuously from layer XVII onwards, and the tripartite structure, altar position, and buttresses characteristic of Sumerian temples were found in layer XI, proving Frankfort's theory that the Sumerians had lived in southern Mesopotamia since the Ubaid period and were responsible for the creation of civilization. ...
