Junayd (English spelling) Abū 'l-Qāsim al-Junayd

An Islamic mystic. Early on, he studied under his uncle Sari al-Saqati (?-865/867) and other Sufis such as Muhashibī. Along with Muhashibī, he is considered a representative of the Baghdad school of Sufism. While the Khorasan school of Sufism, represented by Bistāmī, emphasized the "disappearance" (fanā') of self-consciousness in God and the state of ecstatic "intoxication" (sukr), he emphasized the state of "remaining" (baqā') and "awakening" (saw) that follows, which is a return to a higher level of everyday consciousness, and stressed the compatibility of Sufism with adherence to the sacred law. In this way, he had a great influence on moderate Sufism that emphasizes the sacred law, and many Sufi orders include his name in the chain of succession (silsila) as a basis of their authority. He left several treatises as his books.

イスラムの神秘家。早くから、おじのサリー・サカティーSarī al-Saqati（？―865／867）やムハーシビーなどのスーフィーに師事した。ムハーシビーとともに、スーフィズムのバグダード派の代表者とみなされる。ビスターミーに代表されるスーフィズムのホラサーン派が、神のなかへの自己意識の「消滅」（ファナーfanā'）と忘我的「酩酊(めいてい)」（スクルsukr）を強調したのに対し、その後にくる、高次の日常的意識への回帰である「残存」（バカーbaqā'）と「覚醒(かくせい)」（サフウaw）の状態を強調し、スーフィズムと聖法の遵守の両立性を強調した。こうして彼は聖法を重視する穏健なスーフィズムに大きな影響を与え、多くのスーフィー教団は、その権威のよりどころとして、師資相承の鎖（シルシラ）のなかに彼の名を含めている。著書としていくつかの論文が残っている。
