Alexandrian School

A sect of Christian theology centered in the ancient metropolis of Alexandria. It flourished from the 3rd to 5th centuries. Its founder Clement and his student Origen are well-known in the first half of the 3rd century. They also founded the Alexandrian School, said to be the oldest seminary. Its theological characteristics are that it accepted Hellenistic Judaism and Neoplatonism, but aimed to harmonize and integrate faith and reason, and its biblical interpretation was characterized by a metaphorical method of interpretation. In the latter half of the 4th and 5th centuries, it was represented by Athanasius, Apollinarius, and Kyrillos, and while they shared the same ideological foundation, compared to the apologetic and philosophical first half, it had ecclesiastical and orthodox characteristics, showing the transition of the times.

古代の大都市アレクサンドリアを中心とするキリスト教神学の一派。3～5世紀に栄えた。前半の3世紀には、その創始者クレメンスや、その弟子オリゲネスが著名である。最古の神学校といわれる「アレクサンドリア教校」も彼らによって創設された。その神学的特徴は、ヘレニズム的ユダヤ教や新プラトン主義を受容しながら、信仰と理性の調和、統合を目ざし、聖書解釈においては比喩(ひゆ)的解釈法が特色。後半の4～5世紀は、アタナシウス、アポリナリオス、キリロスなどに代表され、思想的基盤を同じくしながらも、前半が護教的、哲学的であるのに比べ、教権的、正統主義的特徴を有しており、時代の推移を示している。
