A directing and acting technique in which an actor plays two or more roles in the same play by changing costumes in a short space of time. In Kabuki, during the Genroku period (1688-1704), Mizuki Tatsunosuke performed a "Seven Bake" in which he quickly changed into seven roles. During the Bunka and Bunsei periods (1804-1830), this technique became popular in ghost stories and dance, where it took the audience by surprise. In dance, there is a type of performance called hengemono, in which one actor takes on many roles.
