It claimed that mental illness literally originated from mental causes, and that even if physical lesions were involved, they were only secondary results. For this reason, people of this school are sometimes called Psychiatrists. The central figures were JCA Heinroth (1773-1843) and KW Ideler (1795-1860). The former advocated a theological tone that placed special importance on human sin, while the latter took a life history stance based on unsatisfied passions.
