…Psychiatry with a strong psychological tendency emerged in Germany in the first half of the 19th century. It claimed that mental illness literally originated from mental causes, and that even if physical lesions were involved, they were only secondary results. For this reason, people of this school are sometimes called Psychiatrists. The central figures were JCA Heinroth (1773-1843) and KW Ideler (1795-1860). The former advocated a theological tone that placed special importance on human sin, while the latter took a life history stance based on unsatisfied passions. Both were fiercely attacked by the Somatikers, who emphasized anatomical and physiological aspects, and a lively debate ensued between the two schools. …
