UMP (abbreviated as UMP) is an international collaborative research project carried out between 1962 and 1970 with the aim of elucidating the properties of the Earth's upper mantle and its influence on the development of the Earth's crust. The Upper Mantle Committee was established within the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics, and about 50 countries participated in various observations. During this period, the ocean floor spreading hypothesis (1961) and the Vine-Matthews hypothesis (1963), which played a crucial role in establishing this spreading hypothesis, were proposed, and were synthesized as plate tectonics in 1967-1968. The results of UMP were carried over to the International Earth's Interior Dynamics Programme (abbreviated as GDP) in the 1970s. 略称UMP(アンプ)。
