pilling

Friction between the fibers on the surface of woven or knitted fabrics causes the formation of small pills, where the fibers become entangled. As a result, the appearance of the woven fabric surface is marred. Causes of pilling include the particularly high strength of the fibers, the tendency for the fibers to rewind when recovering after being stretched, and their electrostatic properties. Measures that have been taken include making the fibers thicker, twisting the yarn more tightly, avoiding single yarns and using twisted two-ply yarns, and using fibers with a lower Young's modulus. Pilling is more likely to occur in knitted fabrics than in woven fabrics.

織物，メリヤスなどの布地の表面の繊維が摩擦によって，繊維がからみあった小さい毛玉(pill)ができること．その結果，織物表面の外観は損なわれる．ピリングの原因として，繊維の強度がとくに大きいこと，引き伸ばされた後の回復時に巻戻りがあること，帯電性があることなどがある．繊維を太くする，糸のよりを強くする，単糸を避け，より合わせた双糸を用いる，ヤング率を低下させた繊維を用いる，などの対策が行われている．織物よりメリヤスのほうが毛玉が生じやすい．
