Hucho trout (English spelling)

Japanese: イトウ(伊富) - イトウ（英語表記）hucho trout

Among the Salmonidae family, the genus Hucho is a more primitive species than the other three genera (salmon, rainbow trout, and char) (illustration). The genus Hucho is distributed widely across the Eurasian continent, with five species, but the Hucho only lives in Hokkaido and Sakhalin. It has previously been reported that it was caught in Ogawara Marsh in Aomori Prefecture. Its body is reddish purple, its back is slightly dark blue, its abdomen is grayish white, and its dorsal fin and body are dotted with countless small black spots. It is said that fish of the genus Hucho distributed outside of Japan only live in upstream areas and do not migrate to the sea, but only some Hucho are said to migrate to the sea in early spring.

サケ目サケ科の中では他の3属(サケ，ニジマス，イワナ)に比べて原始的であるイトウ属の魚（イラスト）。イトウ属はユーラシア大陸に広く5種が分布するが，イトウは北海道とサハリンだけに分布する。以前には青森県の小河原沼からも採捕の報告がある。体は赤紫色を呈し，背はやや暗青色で腹部は灰白色，背びれ，体には小黒斑点が無数に散在する。日本以外に分布するイトウ属の魚は上流域にのみ生息し海に下らないといわれるが，イトウだけは一部が春先に海に下るといわれている。
