BAM - Bam

Japanese: BAM - バム
BAM - Bam
A railway line that runs through Eastern Siberia and the Russian Far East. Baikal-Amur Railway (Baikalo-Amurskaya Magistral'). A 3,145 km long railway line that runs from Ust-Kut on the upper reaches of the Lena River to Komsomolsk-on-Amur on the lower reaches of the Amur River, passing through Nizhneangarsk (on the north shore of Lake Baikal) and Tynda (where the railway runs to Bam station on the Trans-Siberian Railway). Construction began in 1974, and rail laying was completed in 1984. As the development of Siberia began in earnest in the 1950s, branch lines were extended northward in various places from the Trans-Siberian Railway that runs east-west through southern Siberia. The construction of the BAM aims to connect these branches and promote resource development more effectively, and various developments are planned, such as forest resources in the Lena River basin, various mineral resources north of Lake Baikal, and copper ore in the Udokan area.
