International Shorthand Congress

...After the system of Isaac Pitman (1813-97) was developed in 1837, it spread widely to business and daily life. In 1887, the first International Shorthand Congress was held in London to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Pitman system and the 300th anniversary of the Bright system, and stenographers from all over the world gathered together. Pitman was knighted by Queen Victoria in 1894 for his contribution to the spread of shorthand.
