Also called Gimhae pottery. It was named after the Gimhae shell mounds, based on the ceramic earthenware unearthed at the Gimhae site (Gimhae). Following the tradition of Chinese gray pottery, it was produced mainly on the southeastern coast of the Korean peninsula from the latter half of the 1st century to around the 4th century. It is a new addition to the preceding plain earthenware, and later developed into Gaya earthenware. It was made of selected clay and shaped by hammering techniques. The surface retains the lattice pattern, rope mat pattern, and parallel line pattern from the shaping process, and is surrounded by horizontal sunken lines. It is mainly fired hard using a reducing flame, and most are dark blue in color, but some are gray or yellowish brown in color. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
