A perennial plant of the Umbelliferae family, also known as yaoyabouhu. It is found on the temperate and subtropical coasts of East Asia, and is commonly found on sandy beaches throughout Japan. The roots are thick, penetrate deep into the sand, and are yellowish along with the rhizomes. The leaves are once or twice trifoliate, and the leaflets are obovate-elliptical. They are thick and glossy, with sawtoothed edges, and spread out on the sand. The petioles and stems are reddish. In summer, the plant produces an umbel of dense white flowers at the end of the stem, and an obovate fruit. The leaves are eaten as a garnish for sashimi, and the dried roots are used as a sweat sedative, pain reliever, and fever reducer. It is also added to tososan (a New Year's drink) during the New Year. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
