Cape Awazaki

…It is a small plateau-like island measuring 2km east to west, 500m north to south, and 30m above sea level, but because it is located at the mouth of Tokyo Bay, it has been important for coastal defense since the Edo period. A beacon tower was established at Awazaki, the eastern end, in 1648 (Keian 1), and a battery was installed there in 1808 (Bunka 5). At Nagatsurozaki, the western end, stands the Jogashima Lighthouse, which is also the former site of a lighthouse, and was converted into a Western-style lighthouse in 1870 (Meiji 3). …
