In 732, Charles Martel, mayor of the Frankish kingdom, defeated a Muslim army in the western part of France between Tours and Poitiers. In 729, under the command of the Spanish governor Abd al-Rahman, the Muslim army crossed the Pyrenees through the pass of Roncesbourg (Roncesvalles), raided Gascony, occupied Bordeaux, and crushed the army of Oude, Duke of Aquitaine, on the right bank of the Garonne.
