A commercial city in the northwestern tip of Karnataka state, southwest India. Population 326,000 (1991). A key transportation hub on a plateau about 700m above sea level at the eastern foot of the Western Ghats, it distributes cotton, rice, and raw sugar from the surrounding fertile plains and timber from the mountains, and is home to industries such as truck bodies, furniture, and food. In 1210 it became the capital of the indigenous Ratta state, and in the 16th century the magnificent fort that still stands today was built. It became a British colony in 1818, and a barracks area was built west of the old city, making it a military base in the southwestern Deccan region. インド南西部,カルナータカ州北西端の商業都市。人口32万6000(1991)。西ガーツ山脈東麓の標高約700mの高原上にある交通の要地で,周辺の肥沃な平原からの綿花,米,粗糖,また山地からの木材を集散し,トラック車体,家具,食品などの工業が立地する。1210年に土着勢力のラッタ国の主都となり,16世紀には現存の壮大な城塞が建設された。1818年に英領となり,旧市の西に兵営地区が建設され,南西デカン地方における軍事根拠地となった。
