Japanese: ヤツガシラ(戴勝) - ヤツガシラ（英語表記）hoopoe

A bird of the Upupidae family in the order Coraciiformes (illustration). This family consists of only one species, the Hoopoe. Its English name comes from its song. It is widely distributed in subarctic Eurasia, Africa, and Madagascar. Those that breed in the north migrate south to spend the winter. Total length is about 25 cm. The head, neck, and chest are ochre-colored, and the belly is white. The wings and tail are colored with large black and white spots. On top of the head is a crest of ochre feathers that runs from the forehead to the back of the head, and each crest feather has a black tip. Usually, the crest feathers are folded above the head, but when startled or in flight, they are spread out like a fan and are very noticeable.

ブッポウソウ目ヤツガシラ科Upupidaeの鳥（イラスト）。この科はヤツガシラ1種からなる。英名は鳴声による。ユーラシア大陸の亜寒帯以南，アフリカ，マダガスカルに広く分布している。北方で繁殖するものは南方に渡り越冬する。全長約25cm。頭頸（とうけい）部と胸は黄土色，腹は白い。翼と尾は黒と白の大きな斑紋で色わけされている。頭上には額部から後頭部に並ぶ黄土色の冠羽があり，各冠羽の先端は黒い。ふだんはこの冠羽は頭上にたたまれているが，驚いたときや，飛行中には扇形にひろげられてよく目だつ。
