An annelid of the family Silidae in the class Polychaeta. It grows by irregularly sprouting from the sides of its body, forming a net-like structure that resembles an arabesque pattern, hence the name. It attaches itself to the surface of the Crateromorpha meyeri , a type of hexagonal sponge found on the seafloor at depths of around 400m in Sagami Bay, Suruga Bay, the Philippine Islands, and elsewhere, and is thought to live off the sponges for nourishment. Its body is bright red and about 0.7mm wide. Its protostome has three tentacles and two pairs of eyespots. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
