1850‐1930 A Russian Narodnik revolutionary who came to Japan. Son of a nobleman from Mogilev in Belarus. He participated in the "Into the People" movement, escaped arrest, and went into exile in the fall of 1874. He qualified as a doctor in Romania, assisted Bulgarian nationalists, and was present at the birth of the Romanian socialist movement. He was arrested and deported in 1881, and traveled through eastern Romania before moving to the United States in 1887 with his second wife, Leocazia. He moved to Hawaii in 1892, and ran in the first territorial senate election after Hawaii was annexed by the United States, winning and serving as Senate President.
