The great river of the southern part of the Indian peninsula is revered as the "Dakṣiṇa Gangā (Ganges) of the South." It has a length of 760 km and a total drainage area of 80,000 ^km2 . It originates in the Western Ghats to the west of Mysore city and flows east over the Mysore Plateau at an altitude of 700-800 m in the southernmost part of the Deccan Plateau. It flows through the Eastern Ghats, creating numerous waterfalls and rapids, including the Caveri Falls, and creating deep gorges. It then flows south for a while near Salem in Tamil Nadu, and then flows east again in the lower reaches, forming a wide river valley plain and delta before finally emptying into the Bay of Bengal.

インド半島南部の大河で〈南のガンガー(ガンジス)Dakṣiṇa Gangā〉とあがめられる。延長760km，流域総面積8万km²。マイソール市西方の西ガーツ山脈中に発し，デカン高原最南部を占める標高700～800mのマイソール高原上を東流，東ガーツ山脈にカーベーリ滝をはじめ数多くの滝や急流をつくり深い峡谷をなして貫流した後，タミル･ナードゥ州サーレム(セーラム)付近でしばらく南流，下流部ではふたたび東流して広い河谷平野と三角州をつくり，最後はベンガル湾に注ぐ。
