A bird of the family Scolopacidae (illustration) in the order Charadriiformes. Total length is about 21 cm. It breeds in the tundra zone of the Arctic Circle and migrates to Africa, South Asia, America, etc. in winter. A large number of them migrate to Japan as winter or migratory birds. Its beak is rather long and curves slightly downward, and its legs are short. Its summer plumage is reddish brown with black vertical stripes from the top of the head to the back, shoulder feathers, and rump, the upper tail feathers are black in the center and white on both sides, and the tail is also black in the center and the outer tail feathers are gray. Its underside is white, and it has thin black vertical stripes from the face to the chest, and a large black spot on its abdomen.
