Focillon (English spelling) Henri Joseph Focillon

Focillon (English spelling) Henri Joseph Focillon

A French scholar of aesthetics and art history. His father, Victor (1849-1916), was known as an etcher and made copies of works by contemporary artists. Due to his influence, he started studying printmaking. He studied at the École Normale Supérieure, and later served as a professor at the University of Lyon and the University of Paris. During World War II, he went to the United States and taught archaeology and art history at Yale University, where he died in New Haven, where the university is located. His aesthetics always considered technique, and he interpreted works in the same way that artists who create works approach technique, trying to approach their essence by interpreting them in the context of a problem. His research into art history was also broad, spanning from the Middle Ages to modern times and the present, and he had a great influence on later generations. In addition to his major works, The Life of Form (1934) and Western Art: Romanesque and Gothic (1938), he also wrote Buddhist Art (1921) and A History of European Painting in the 19th and 20th Centuries (1928).
