A tall tree of the Lauraceae family. A subvariety of camphor, it is found from southern China to southeastern Taiwan. Its flowers and fruits are smaller than those of camphor, and it differs in that its leaf edges are wavy. The basic camphor species contains camphor in the plant body, but camphor contains almost no camphor, and instead contains 1.5 times as much linalool as camphor. Steam distillation of the branches and leaves produces about 1% essential oil, of which 30-70% is linalool. The essential oil has a refined fragrance and is used in high-end perfumes.
