?-1877 Oglala Sioux chief who resisted military conquest by the United States Army in the 1860s and 1870s. He was one of the leaders of the Indian army that defeated GA Custer's forces at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876. He made a name for himself in the battle to destroy Fetterman's troops in 1866, and also defeated Crook's forces at the Battle of the Rosebud in 1876. After a fierce battle with Miles' forces in the spring of 1877, he surrendered with 2,000 of his men.
