King of Portugal. Reigned 1557-78. Grandson of João III. Born after the death of his father Dom João, he ascended to the throne at the age of three. Until he took direct rule in 1568, his grandmother Doña Catalina, sister of King Philip II of Spain, and his great-uncle Cardinal Henry served as regents. He received a fanatical Catholic education, and after taking direct rule, he planned a crusade against Morocco, which João III had abandoned. Despite opposition from his aides, he took advantage of the internal conflict in Morocco and landed in North Africa at the head of a large army in 1578. However, due to Sebastião's reckless strategy, the Portuguese army was annihilated at Alcázar Quibir, and the king himself went missing.

ポルトガル王。在位1557‐78年。ジョアン3世の孫。父ドン･ジョアンの死後に生まれ，3歳で即位した。1568年の親政まで，祖母でスペイン王フェリペ2世の妹のドナ･カタリナ，大叔父のエンリケ枢機卿が摂政に就いた。狂信的なカトリック教育を受け，親政後はジョアン3世が放棄したモロッコに対する十字軍戦争を計画した。側近の反対にもかかわらず，78年モロッコの内紛に乗じて大軍を率いて北アフリカに上陸した。しかし，セバスティアンの無謀な作戦でポルトガル軍はアルカサル･キビルで壊滅し，国王自身も行方不明となった。
