1554‐78 King of Portugal. Reigned 1557-78. Grandson of João III. Born after the death of his father Dom João, he ascended to the throne at the age of three. Until he took direct rule in 1568, his grandmother Doña Catalina, sister of King Philip II of Spain, and his great-uncle Cardinal Henry served as regents. He received a fanatical Catholic education, and after taking direct rule, he planned a crusade against Morocco, which João III had abandoned. Despite opposition from his aides, he took advantage of the internal conflict in Morocco and landed in North Africa at the head of a large army in 1578. However, due to Sebastião's reckless strategy, the Portuguese army was annihilated at Alcázar Quibir, and the king himself went missing.
