Tatami room decoration

Japanese: 座敷飾 - ざしきかざり

It is also called tokokazari (floor decoration). During the Muromachi period, there was a strong desire for Chinese cultural artifacts, and many masterpieces such as calligraphy, paintings, ceramics, and lacquerware (karamono) were imported. Even in the homes of upper-class samurai, the rooms were decorated with works of art (shoin-zukuri style), modeled on the shoin studies of Zen temples. There was a set method for decorating these, and during the Tozan period when Ashikaga Yoshimasa was shogun, a guidebook called Kimidai Kansochoki was created, which explained the evaluations of painters, mainly from the Song and Yuan dynasties, how to decorate, and the tools they used, as well as records of the room decorations of the Tozandono and Ogawadono palaces (Figure).

床飾（とこかざり）ともいう。室町時代は中国の文物に対するあこがれが強く，書画，陶磁器，漆器などの名品(唐物（からもの）)が数多く輸入された。上層の武家住宅においても，禅寺の書院にならって座敷を美術品で飾った(書院造)。これらの飾り方には一定の方式があり，足利義政が将軍であった東山時代には，宋･元を中心とする画家の評価や飾り方，道具類を解説した《君台観左右帳記》という手引書や，東山殿や小川殿の座敷飾の記録が作られている（図）。
