A genus of the family Phaeophyceae in the order Phaeophytales, it resembles a brown tuft of hair. Its body is unilinear and branched, and its cells have spiral chromatophores. It is found along the coasts of the world, but the number of species is greater in cold seas. A representative species is E. siliculosus (Dillw.) Lyngb., which grows well in winter and can reach up to 30 cm in length. It is disliked as a pest in seaweed farms. Similar genera include the genus Giffordia , which has many disc-shaped chromatophores and the reproductive organs located relatively high up on the body, and the genus Feldmannia , which also has disc-shaped chromatophores but the reproductive organs are located relatively low on the body and grow on other seaweeds.
