Like Japanese rice-growing rituals, Southeast Asian rice-growing rituals are based on the ceremonies of sowing, transplanting, and harvesting, but like wheat, rice is also personified, and it is believed that marriage between male and female rice produces rice offspring. In the Indonesian islands of Bali and Lombok, at harvest time, some of the rice is harvested and divided into two bundles, one for men and one for women.
