Also known as the Baptist denomination. The largest Protestant denomination. It is so named because it does not recognize infant baptism and advocates baptism by immersion of the whole body in water (immersion) based on a conscious confession of faith. It places more importance on spiritual freedom of faith than on external forms and systems, and advocates the independence and autonomy of the church. It was founded in the early 17th century by J. Smith, who fled oppression from the Church of England and travelled to the Netherlands, and became a major force in the United States after R. Williams founded a church in 1639. There are both northern and southern factions, with M. L. King and B. Graham being southern Baptists and Rauschenbusch being northern Baptists. It has also been carrying out missionary work in Japan since 1873 (northern) and 1890 (southern). →Anabaptists
