Baur - Ferdinand Christian Baur

Baur - Ferdinand Christian Baur

German Protestant theologian and church historian, one of the representatives of the Tübingen School. Born on June 21, Schmieden near Stuttgart, the son of a pastor. Studied at the Theological Institute of the University of Tübingen, became a professor at the Blaubeuren Seminary, where he taught D.F. Strauss and others. In 1826, he became a professor at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Tübingen, where he taught church history and doctrinal history. Following Hegel's philosophy of history, he first interpreted the history of early Christianity dialectically. That is, Paul's Gentile Christian church of the spirit (spirit) was born in opposition to Peter's Jewish Christian church of the law, and the ancient Catholic church of the 2nd and 3rd centuries was formed as a dialectical synthesis of these two tendencies. The documents of the New Testament are also judged to belong to one of these two tendencies. The group of people who used this method of "tendency criticism" is called the "Young Tübingen School." He also positively evaluated Gnosticism, and in his History of Christian Doctrine (1847) he described the whole of it in a dialectical diagram of thesis, antithesis, and synthesis. He died in Tübingen on December 2nd.
