Bakhtiari people - Bakhtiari tribe (English spelling)
A major semi-nomadic tribal alliance in Iran. During the Iranian Constitutional Revolution, they sided with the constitutionalists and played an important role in restoring constitutionalism. They were suppressed during the reza shah period, but after World War II, the tribal chief's family was once again appointed to important positions in the government. Their total number is estimated at 300,000 to 400,000, and they are divided into the Haft Lang and Chahar Lang, each of which is further divided into smaller groups. Although they are Muslims, customary law is the social norm, and they speak the Lor dialect of Persian. A little over 30% of them continue to live a nomadic life, traveling to the Zagros Mountains in summer and the foothills and plains in winter in search of pasture for their sheep and goats. They were previously famous for raising high-quality Arabian horses. The majority are sedentary.
